Sotai

Sotai is a Japanese movement therapy that aims to restore the body to a state of balance. In a session, I will help guide the body through a series of movements, each designed to unwind tension built up in muscle tissue. Movements are performed in a direction which is most comfortable to the patient and help to diminish musculoskeletal distortions

Moxabustion

Moxabustion is an adjunctive therapy in TCM, where are herb called Moxa (mugwort) is burned either over the skin or on the head of an acupuncture needle. Moxa is considered to be both "tonifying" and "warming", meaning it can help to build energy in an area, as well as provide warmth and circulation. Alleviating pain in arthritic and achy joints, alleviating cramps, and improving immunity are all common uses for moxa.

Cupping / Guasha

Cupping is an adjunctive therapy in TCM, where cups are placed on the skin, typically the back, to alleviate tightness and spasms in the muscles. Suction is applied the tight tissues are pulled into the cup like a vacuum. They are left on for anywhere from 5-20 minutes before being removed. Marks resembling bruises are often left on the skin for 3-7 days, and represent the stagnation in your tissue coming to the surface to be eliminated from the body.

Guasha is also a TCM therapy, and is similar to cupping. It is often used for the same conditions and on the same locations, however, instead of suction, the muscle tightness and spasms are "scraped" out using a porcelain soup spoon. The skin is not broken during treatment, but small strokes are used to bring the tight tissue to the surface, which is also represented by bruise-like marks.

Guasha and cupping are said to remove "pathogenic factors" from the body. For this reason, these modalities can be used to treat the common cold, breathing difficulties, chest tightness, inflammation and much more.
