Frequently Asked Questions:

Will it hurt?
Acupuncture is not the same for everyone, however at no point should the needles be causing you pain during a treatment. Occasionally you will feel a pinch as the needle breaks the skin, but once they are in they should not produce pain. Some people feel a sensation around the needle, or a "dull ache", but this is a normal qi sensation. If at any point a needle feels uncomfortable, SPEAK UP!, and I will be happy to adjust it.

How often will I need to go?
Everyone responds to acupuncture slightly differently. Generally the more acute the condition, the quicker someone becomes symptom free, and vice versa. That being said most patients start treatments 1-2 times per week. As the symptom free time expands between treatments, you can start to space the treatments out to every other week, and so on.

What do I wear to acupuncture?
Most needling takes place from elbows and knees down, so you should wear loose clothing that can be moved around comfortably.
If needles need to be placed in the abdomen or upper back, modest draping will take place so that you always feel comfortable.

Will I feel a difference right away?
Yes and No. Some people notice a difference immediately, especially with a more mild or acute condition. Others may take longer to see a change; often with chronic ailments the changes will be more subtle. For example, someone with severe chronic back pain at first may only notice that its easier to get out of bed, or that the pain, while still present, is more mild in nature.

What kind of needles do you use?
The needles are all sterile, single use disposable needles.
They go from their sterile packaging into each patient, and are disposed of after treatment.

Does cupping hurt?
Cupping can be done lightly or more intense fashion depending on the patients preferences and needs.
It is important to remember that most cupping will leave bruise-like marks on the body, which take several days before they go away.

Does my insurance cover acupuncture?
Depending on your insurance plan, acupuncture may be covered. You will need to call your insurance provider (generally the number is on the back of the card) to determine your individual benefits.
